The field of railway interlocking has been evolving for centuries - not always at a steady pace. Many lines are taken into operation and not updated for decades. In Denmark alone there are more than 20 different electromechanical interfaces in operation, some of them designed more than half a century ago - and still in operation providing safety critical transition zones.
